About the job
As Material & Technology Engineer Surface treatment, you will be a key contributor, initiating and leading material & technology development and improvement of existing materials and technologies in order to improve performance, durability, cost effectiveness and sustainability of products.
You will bring your material and process knowledge into the product development process, supporting “right from the beginning” with best overall solution in terms of cost , performance. You will secure category specific knowledge of Materials and Technologies and clarify and maintain current IKEA standards to ensure IKEA’s competitive advantage.
Your main responsibilities in surface treatment will be to:
Together with the Product Development teams (POD-teams) secure an effective utilization and implementation of new materials and technologies in the product development process to achieve better quality and lower cost
Initiate and lead material & technology development/improvement projects
Continuously search for and be updated on developments in the assigned specialist area (internal and external) and share to relevant stakeholders
Participate in Material & Innovation development projects for new materials & technologies in alignment with the range and business needs
Be the speaking partner to purchasing teams and Home Furnishing Businesses to identify & use production and material potentials in the product development, with know-how in construction, material, production, sustainability effects and technical platforms
Sustain and communicate specifications and standards for relevant materials as well as support in developing new test methods in cooperation with Test Lab, Product Requirement and Compliance (PR&C) and relevant industry partners
Secure usage of standards when possible and/or standardization of existing and proven materials
Secure knowledge sharing and lead material specific trainings

Qualifications
Have university degree or documented relevant experience from relevant profession role(s),
Solid knowledge and experience of surface treatment processes and material characteristics,
you have the ability to combine long and short-term view in a complex environment and deliver excellent results.
You enjoy working with supplier development utilizing and sharing your material and production technology knowledge and experience.
You have project leadership experience, and you influence others through cooperation and networking and have a strong drive, combining analytical approach with being business minded.

Assignment

You will be driving and taking part in innovative development projects, performing material tests and securing the Quality level of the raw material in the responsibility area. You will also be responsible for creating and maintaining the technical documentation, and working with the standardization of the plastic material range. You will also lead the quality compliance of the material and production processes at the raw material suppliers in accordance with IKEA specifications.

You will lead development projects of new materials & innovations, creating the foundation for an outstanding IKEA range. The position reports to Material and Innovation Development Leader Polymers

IKEA has a clear material direction, and when it comes to plastics, by 2030 only recycled and renewable materials should exist in our plastic applications. We have already made an announcement that we will move away from virgin fossil based raw materials and will embrace circularity example being using our own packaging to make new products. We have also developed partnerships with different Value chain partners to get the renewable plastics starting with injection moulding applications.

In terms of the technology focus and biomass focus we cover from fermentation (bio technology route) to cracking to catalysis. The rationale being to understand which biomass is suitable for which technology to get the most optimal yield and hence lowest possible cost. The very essence of the IKEA vision is “better everyday life for the many people” and hence cost is and will be a driving factor going forward.

As a Material Developer Bio Polymers you will lead and be part of a transformation, not only for IKEA but also for the industry as such. The responsibility and mandate which comes with it is to lead the process for ideation & exploration till developing new materials and technologies till the point that they can be integrated into the normal product development process.
You will take the new bio materials through the material testing and validation phase along with research institutes we work with, product verification with the innovation suppliers that we have identified and support the capacity build up phase with your knowledge and capabilities that you develop while developing new materials and technologies.

You will also be responsible for:
- Based on IKEA directions and knowledge about life at home, market situation and competitors on the IKEA markets, identify, initiate and lead end to end material innovation projects within the Polymers area;
- Test and validate the new materials as well as ensure product verification;
- Secure that all necessary agreements are in place together with legal counsel and support in negotiations and initiate patent application processes together with the patent team;
